The Combined Challenge of Electrical Safety and Outdoor Durability

New energy and power applications include traction-battery components, energy-storage cabinets, outdoor storage equipment and EV chargers. Components may face high voltage, high current, humidity, thermal cycling, UV, salt spray and outdoor temperature variation. Coatings must balance insulation, corrosion protection, weatherability and mechanical stability.

Select the System by Insulation Function and Equipment Environment

    • Battery housings, busbars and motor components: insulating epoxy powder.
    • Internal storage-cabinet parts: epoxy or epoxy-polyester systems.
    • Outdoor cabinets, EV chargers and containerised storage: weatherable polyester topcoats.
  • More corrosive environments: epoxy primer systems.
  • Veri Coating offers insulating epoxy, heavy-duty epoxy, standard-durable and super-durable polyester systems.

Key Electrical and Environmental Performance Indicators

  • Dielectric withstand voltage and insulation resistance.
  • Dielectric strength, surface resistivity and volume resistivity.
  • Performance at 85°C/85% RH.
  • Coating integrity and retained dielectric performance after thermal shock.
  • Salt spray, weatherability and adhesion for outdoor cabinets.
  • Veri Coating insulating epoxy can achieve dielectric strength >=35 kV/mm and volume resistivity >=10^14 ohm-cm.

Edge Insulation and Film-Thickness Control Risks

Busbars, housing folds and complex geometries can produce uneven film build. Thin areas may reduce insulation margin, while excessive thickness can increase pinhole and curing risk. Conductive joints, grounding points and assembly surfaces require accurate masking. Insulating products should be batch-verified for film thickness, cure and electrical performance.

Future Trend: Higher Voltage and Combined Functions

As energy-storage systems and electric vehicles move to higher voltages, coatings will place greater emphasis on high insulation, humidity resistance, thermal-shock resistance and long-term reliability. Lower-temperature curing, thin-film insulation, automated in-line inspection and combined insulation-corrosion protection will become important directions.

Insulating Powder Coating for EV Battery Components

Customer Profile

Nannan Aluminum manufactures battery components for BYD. The project covers insulating and protective coatings for EV battery structural parts.

Applications

Battery housings, battery trays, liquid-cooling plates and busbars, coated with black and blue pure epoxy smooth finishes in high and medium gloss.

Project Summary

Supply has continued since March 2025, with annual consumption of approximately 120 tonnes and monthly deliveries of 10–15 tonnes. The coating replaces blue protective film and selected liquid-paint processes, reduces VOC emissions, and lowers total coating cost by more than 25%.

Blue high-gloss pure epoxy coating on battery housings and related components.

Requirements

Replace blue protective film and improve structural bond strength
