EV Charging Stations

Weathering, corrosion protection and texture stability outdoors

EV charging stations include outdoor charger housings, connector holders, cable guards and related facilities. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation, rain, temperature changes and road contamination requires a balance of weatherability, stain resistance and decorative appearance.

Veri Coating offers super-durable polyester-TGIC textured powder coatings; fine-sand and wrinkle textures effectively conceal substrate imperfections, while selected TDS grades can target AAMA 2604 and are supported by xenon-arc and cyclic-corrosion testing.

Application notes: Film thickness and texture consistency should be controlled, welds and grounding points require particular inspection, and the recommended film thickness is 70-120 um.

Typical Powder Coating Challenges for EV Charging Stations

Resistance to Screen-Wash SolventsScreen-wash wiping can cause local whitening, gloss loss or softening.

Resistance to Screen-Wash Solvents

EV charging-station enclosures may contact strong screen-wash or stencil-cleaning solvents during screen printing, rework or cleaning. Conventional polyester coatings may whiten, lose gloss, soften, become tacky or transfer colour during wiping; dark and low-gloss finishes are often more sensitive.

Formulation Design

  1. Use a polyester system with higher crosslink density and solvent resistance; for demanding projects, evaluate a 90:10 polyester or polyurethane powder coating.
  2. Reduce readily migrating waxes and surface additives while balancing matting, flow and chemical resistance.

Process Control

  1. Validate with the customer's actual screen-wash solvent and specified wiping method; do not substitute a general-purpose cleaner.
  2. Ensure full cure, because undercure markedly reduces solvent resistance, while avoiding overbake that causes discolouration.
  3. Define contact time, wiping pressure and cleaning frequency, together with acceptable appearance change.
Validation Focus
  • Number of screen-wash wipe cycles
  • Colour/gloss after wiping
  • Surface softening or tack
  • Adhesion retention
Unstable Adhesion of Labels and Screen-Printing InksLifting labels or lost screen print indicates poor compatibility with the coating surface.

Unstable Adhesion of Labels and Screen-Printing Inks

Labels, nameplates or screen-printing inks may lift, detach, lose print, dewet or develop blurred edges on powder-coated surfaces. Low-gloss, textured or highly slip-modified coatings, particularly those with migrating surface additives, reduce adhesive and ink wetting and bonding. Problems usually become more evident after damp heat and outdoor ageing.

Formulation Design

  1. Control surface migration of waxes, flow agents and matting components to retain surface energy suitable for bonding and printing.
  2. Subject to appearance and weathering requirements, select a smooth polyester system with a more stable surface condition.

Process Control

  1. Test final colour, gloss and texture panels with the actual label adhesive, ink and primer.
  2. Clean the surface before printing or labelling and prevent contamination by silicone, oil, release agent or dust.
  3. Confirm full coating cure and control humidity, ambient temperature and surface temperature during labelling and screen printing.
Validation Focus
  • 180° label peel
  • Cross-hatch/tape adhesion of screen print
  • Bonding after damp heat
  • Rub resistance and retention after ageing
