Decorative finish, scratch resistance and indoor-outdoor durability

Furniture includes metal tables and chairs, filing cabinets, display racks and similar products that require both decorative appearance and protection. Textured finishes help conceal substrate imperfections, while smooth grades provide high-flow surfaces.

Veri Coating offers textured pure epoxy, textured and smooth epoxy-polyester hybrid, high-durable polyester-HAA, and standard- or high-durable polyester-TGIC textured and smooth powders, with GT0 adhesion, 50 kg-cm impact resistance and more than 1,000 hours of salt-spray resistance. For comparable textures, TGIC grades offer a greater cost advantage than HAA grades.

Application notes: Castings should be preheated for degassing, and textured products require control of film thickness and colour difference; the recommended thickness is 70-120 um.

Metal furniture, shelving and cabinets often include slender sections, welds, inside corners and narrow gaps. The Faraday cage effect and unsuitable application settings can leave recesses exposed or undercoated, while the use of reclaim powder may cause deposition to fluctuate.

Formulation Design

  1. Optimise particle-size distribution and charging characteristics to improve penetration and deposition on complex geometries.
  2. Subject to flow and mechanical-property requirements, adjust powder flowability and reactivity to reduce sagging on vertical surfaces and pull-away from edges and corners.

Process Control

  1. Coat inside corners, welds and shadowed areas before large flat surfaces; use a low-voltage pre-coat or touch-up pass where necessary.
  2. Adjust gun distance, spray angle, reciprocator speed and part grounding to suit the geometry and avoid back ionization at high voltage.
  3. Fix the reclaim-powder blend ratio and monitor particle-size shifts to prevent fines enrichment from destabilising deposition.

Dark matt cabinets, table frames and handles readily show fingerprints, oils and wipe marks during handling and use. Surface roughness, gloss, surface energy and degree of cure all affect contaminant adhesion and appearance recovery after cleaning.

Formulation Design

  1. Balance the matting system, flow-control agent and surface-modifying additives to reduce stain adhesion while maintaining a stable matt finish.
  2. Select a chemically resistant epoxy-polyester hybrid or pure epoxy system that retains appearance and adhesion after cleaner exposure.

Process Control

  1. Control film thickness and degree of cure to prevent an undercured, tacky surface that readily attracts contamination.
  2. Standardise the cleaner, wiping material and number of wipe cycles used for validation.
  3. Minimise particulate and silicone contamination in the booth to prevent local craters and surface non-uniformity that make stains more visible.
