Shelving

Scratch resistance, batch consistency and thin-section stability

Shelving includes warehouse racks, logistics transfer racks, supermarket display racks and other indoor storage equipment. Frequent impact during goods handling requires good abrasion resistance and powder application efficiency.

Veri Coating offers smooth epoxy-polyester hybrid powder with GT0 adhesion and 50 kg-cm impact resistance, together with high-durable polyester-HAA and standard- or high-durable polyester-TGIC textured powders. The textured grades provide good hiding and high coating yield, while TGIC textures offer a greater cost advantage.

Application notes: Long thin-walled parts should be protected against heat deformation, and hanging points, film thickness and texture consistency should be controlled.

Typical Powder Coating Challenges for Shelving

Load, Scratch and Abrasion ResistanceLoading and friction cause scratches, gloss change and substrate exposure.

Load, Scratch and Abrasion Resistance

Shelving beams, uprights and panels are exposed to sustained loads, friction and impact during stacking, dragging and transport. The coating may scratch, burnish, dent locally or expose the substrate, allowing corrosion to start at damaged areas. Simply increasing hardness can embrittle the film and reduce its impact and assembly tolerance.

Formulation Design

  1. Use an epoxy-polyester hybrid or abrasion-resistant textured system that balances hardness, toughness and wear resistance.
  2. Wear-resistant fillers and slip additives may be used in moderation, with impact, bend and intercoat-adhesion performance verified in parallel.

Process Control

  1. Remove substrate burrs and sharp edges to prevent local stress concentrations and substrate exposure.
  2. Ensure full cure; undercure reduces hardness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance.
  3. Perform reciprocating abrasion and load tests using the actual pallets, cartons or metal contact parts.

Coating Chipping Around Fastener HolesThe coating cracks, lifts or detaches around holes after fastening.

Coating Chipping Around Fastener Holes

During bolt tightening, riveting or hole-expansion assembly, the coating around a hole may crack, lift and detach in flakes. Common causes include burrs, excessive film build, excessive brittleness after crosslinking, inadequate pretreatment adhesion, and stress concentrations from tightening torque or washer edges.

Formulation Design

  1. Improve coating flexibility and impact resistance instead of pursuing excessive hardness.
  2. Optimise the resin-to-curing-agent ratio and pigment and extender loading to reduce local brittle cracking around holes.

Process Control

  1. Deburr punched holes thoroughly and break sharp hole edges before pretreatment and coating.
  2. Control film build around holes and avoid heavy application; adjust racking and gun angle where necessary.
  3. Standardise bolt torque, washer geometry and assembly sequence, then validate under final assembly conditions.
