# Outdoor Energy Storage Equipment

Powder coatings for outdoor energy-storage systems and battery cabinets: super-durable HAA to Qualicoat Class 2 and TGIC to AAMA 2604 for salt and UV.

Parent application: [New Energy & Power](https://www.vericoating.com/applications/new-energy-power.md)

## High-durability protection against salt, humidity and UV

Outdoor energy-storage equipment includes containerised storage systems, outdoor battery cabinets and related metal structures. Long-term sunlight, hot and humid conditions, salt exposure and temperature changes place high demands on super-durable weatherability and salt-corrosion resistance.

Veri Coating offers super-durable polyester-HAA smooth and TGIC textured powders with at least 90% gloss retention after 1,000 hours of xenon-arc exposure, targeting Qualicoat Class 2 or AAMA 2604 where stated in the selected TDS. At an equivalent performance level, TGIC systems offer a greater cost advantage.

Application notes: Edge coverage, film thickness and curing should be controlled.

## Typical Powder Coating Challenges for Outdoor Energy Storage Equipment

### Super-Durable, UV-Resistant and Non-Chalking Performance

Outdoor energy-storage equipment is exposed to intense ultraviolet radiation, high temperatures, rain and thermal cycling. If weatherability is inadequate, the coating progressively loses gloss, fades, chalks and becomes brittle, with appearance changes usually more pronounced in dark and highly saturated colours.

Super-Durable, UV-Resistant and Non-Chalking Performance：Long-term outdoor exposure causes chalking, fading and gloss loss, affecting appearance and protection.

**Formulation Design**

- Use a super-durable polyester-HAA system with highly weatherable pigments, stabilising additives and a compatible resin-curing combination.
- Avoid metallic effects with inadequate weatherability and readily migrating additives; evaluate a clear protective topcoat where necessary.

**Process Control**

- Control film thickness, cure and batch colour difference, preventing undercure from reducing weatherability.
- Select the weathering class for the project's UV level, temperature and humidity, and exposure orientation.
- Approve colours on panels prepared with the final substrate, pretreatment and film thickness.

**Validation Focus**

- Gloss retention after xenon-arc weathering
- Colour difference after ageing
- Chalking rating
- Adhesion after damp heat

### High Corrosion and Salt-Spray Resistance (C4/C5)

Coastal, industrial-pollution and hot-humid environments expose energy-storage equipment to prolonged salt spray, condensation and corrosive media. A conventional single-layer polyester can blister and rust at welds, cut edges, fasteners and water traps, with corrosion spreading from defects, making C4/C5 durability difficult to achieve consistently.

High Corrosion and Salt-Spray Resistance (C4/C5)：In severe salt exposure, blistering and rust spread from edges and fasteners.

**Formulation Design**

- Use a heavy-duty pure epoxy powder primer with a weatherable polyester topcoat, separating corrosion protection from weathering performance in a two-coat system.
- Set primer, topcoat and total film thickness for the corrosion category and design life, with enhanced edge coverage.

**Process Control**

- Thoroughly degrease and derust the steel and establish a stable conversion coating; pretreat welds and sharp edges separately.
- Control the primer-to-topcoat recoat window, intercoat cleanliness and degree of cure to prevent intercoat adhesion failure.
- Provide touch-up and sealing measures at cut edges, holes, fasteners and water-trap areas.

**Validation Focus**

- ISO 12944 system compatibility
- Salt spray/cyclic corrosion
- Corrosion creepage from a scribe
- Intercoat adhesion
